Saturday I woke up at 8 and was out the door by 9. Due to the large size of the gathering (about 80 bikes) there weren't many organized activities. We just didn't all fit in any restaurant
and that would be far too large of a ride. I hooked up with several other riders lead by Roozbeh Chubak for a tour around the south end of the park. After gathering at Bad Water (280 feet
below sea level, the lowest point) 5 bikes headed out. Roozbeh on his R1100GS, Dan Arnold on his R1100GS, me on my K1200RS, another rider (whose name escapes me) on his K1200RS and Herb
Stark with his wife on their R1100RT.
It was a spirited ride with Roozbeh and myself at the front of the group, followed by Herb, the other K12 with Dan Arnold serving as tailgunner. We headed out, over several passes around
2000 feet, to Shoshone to top up, and then around to Dante's View. (elevation 5475). On one long straightaway I attempted to top my previous record. I only beat it by 1 MPH (for 141 MPH)
even though my saddle bags were off. Maybe without the tank bag I could duck behind the windscreen for another MPH or two. The road up to Dante's View was very fun at the end with a lot of
very tight switchbacks. I actually had to drop out of 6th gear for these.
After waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, taking some pictures and greeting some other riders that showed up we headed back to Furnace Creek for lunch. We left around 9:30, got back
to Furnace Creek around 1 PM. There was a gathering for door prizes at 3 PM so between lunch and topping up there wasn't much time for another run. (I didn't want to be out in the desert
after dark if I could avoid it.) At the gathering I picked up my official DVD III/Village Idiots pin. Roozbeh won the Cascade BMW shirt that I had brought (riders were asked to bring shirts
from their dealers). Again, quite a bit of looking at bikes and discussing various issues the bikes had. (for example my fork seals were just starting to weep when I left Redmond; by now
they are leaking rather vigorously). The problem cleaning the wheels and exhaust canister was covered. One rider fixed this by polishing his wheels and clear coating them (either this or
chroming them; I only saw his K12 briefly so I didn't have a chance to talk to him.)
